Wild Wet Spring

It looks to be another wet spring for us down here in beautiful Beggs, Oklahoma. We've officially had flood number one and quite a bit of rain since. Unfortunately, this keeps the ground pretty saturated so we are unable to get down in the groves and brush hog. It's important to keep the groves mowed to keep down pests and weeds. Weeds grow up around the trees and drain important nutrients out of the soil. Even worse, during the last storm we lost two of our large trees. Our groves are native and some of these trees are over 300 years old. Both trees we lost are between 150 and 200 years old so we are pretty heart broken. Fortunately, no one was injured and all of our livestock was safe.

On a positive note, the remaining trees have finished tasseling and we now have nutlets. With lots of help from mother nature, these little guys will develop over the summer into our yummy pecans. The success of our next harvest is still up in the air as there continue to be many factors in nut development. In the meantime, we will work to get the two downed trees cut up for firewood and clean-up the remaining mess. Hopefully, it will dry out enough to get down there with a brush hog and get some mowing done.

This month continues to be busy with a number of festivals and events. Saturday, June 4 we are roasting in Wewoka, OK for the Wewoka Craft/Vendor Bazaar. This is the first year for this bazaar and we are excited to be included in the event. We are hoping to see everyone out for a road trip!

We are also roasting at the Okmulgee Pecan Festival in Okmulgee, OK over the 9th, 10th, and 11th. This is looking to be an epic event! This exciting three day fun-filled event will have a sweet and savory pecan cooking competition, Mocklahoma, Ribs & Roll BBQ Competition, Extreme FMX Motorcross Stunt Show, Waterball, Turtle Races, and so much more!
Our final roasting outing this month will be in Bixby, OK on June 17th and 18th at Vintage Down South. This two day show will have items from craftsmen and vendors all over Oklahoma.
